Frequently Asked Questions

  • Question
Which fire extinguisher should I use?
    Answer
Please use our guide to select either an environment or risk.

You can also view our individual products for more information of how and where to use a certain extinguisher.
  • Question
Which colour extinguisher do I need?
    Answer
Please look at the label to distinguish the colour of the extinguisher. By not using the colour coding below suggests the fire extinguisher does not conform to the British standard and therefore cannot display the Kite mark.

    Red = Water
    Foam = Cream
    Dry Powder = Blue
    Carbon Dioxide (CO2) = Black
    Wet Chemicals = Yellow
  • Question
How do I get my free Extinguisher ID sign?
    Answer
Purchase any extinguisher and any stand and you will automatically receive the extinguisher ID sign totally free of charge. We will simply add the sign to your order on despatch.

We will send either a landscape or portrait sign (we cannot specify the orientation you will receive) which is relevant to the extinguisher type you have chosen.

The stand and extinguisher do need to be ordered at the same time and within the same purchase to qualify.

Please do not add the sign to your basket as you will be charged for this.
  • Question
What does the letters or Fire Rating mean?
    Answer
All extinguishers capable of extinguishing class A and B fires carry a Fire Rating which is indicated by a number and letter. The number indicates the size of fire it can extinguish under test conditions so the larger the number, the larger the fire it can extinguish. The letter indicates the fire classification as above. Some extinguishers like Dry Powder for example carry both a class A and class B rating because of the properties of the extinguishing agent.
    The classes are listed below:

Class A - Suitable for organic solids like paper and wood
Type of fire extinguisher - Water, Foam, Dry Powder, Wet Chemicals

Class B - Suitable for flammable liquids
Type of fire extinguisher - Foam, Dry Powder, CO2

Class C - Suitable for flammable gasses
Type of fire extinguisher - Dry Powder

Electrical Risk - Suitable for electrical equipment
Type of fire extinguisher - Dry Powder, CO2 Gas

Class F - Suitable for cooking oil and fat
Type of fire extinguisher - Wet Chemical

  • Question
How often do I need to inspect & service my extinguishers?
    Answer
All Fire Extinguishing Appliances (known as FEAs); extinguishers, hosereels, sprinklers, blankets etc should be inspected/tested by a competent person from an established organisation that has the capacity and facilities to undertake such important work on an annual basis. All items should be badged/branded to this effect indicating the month of test and the month of the next testing

A nominated person should walk the site on a weekly basis to check that al portable FEAs are in order; especially extinguishers and blankets. This three-way check should ensure that (i) the item(s) are in their intended positions and not moved elsewhere from their position notice(s)
(ii) there are no signs of tampering
(iii) there is no dampness or corrosion on the casing of extinguishers; especially at the bottom. In cases (ii) & (iii) this will clearly demonstrate that these items are at risk and; as such, may not be fit for purpose and should be withdrawn from service immediately.

An astute FM will ensure that there are spares available; either in-house (obviously included in the annual inspection/test cycle) to replace defective items that should be repaired/re-filled or replaced by the organisation that undertakes this activity. If the employers policy is not to hold spares in-house then s/he should have the facility to contact that organisation to immediately replace and remove the defective item(s).

It should also be understood by all employees that it is an offence under H & S laws to tamper with and/or inappropriately remove any FEA. The weekly three-way check is devised to identify any such inappropriate action.

Once an extinguisher has been used, even if only partially discharged, it must be recharged according to the manufacture's instructions. The extinguisher should be properly serviced once a year. You should use a company registered by the British Approvals for Fire Equipment (BAFE). BAFE is a Government recognised national organisation.
